Firstly, he was intrigued by the interest shown by Branson and secondly, because Branson kept persisting. The final price was agreed at around $120,000 which rose to $180,000 after taxes.

The government of the British Virgin Islands put up a condition on the sale, that the island would have to be turned into a resort by the landowners within four years of buying it. It was a massive task, and not what Branson had gone into the purchase for. But he was up to the challenge.
